What you will experience during your stay
Three intense weeks await you in the very heart of the Amazon wilderness. You will observe animals in the wild, learn about their behavior, help with the installation of research equipment and with data collection and processing. All with expert guidance.
You will actively participate in animal monitoring using camera traps and video feeders.
You will learn to build and install bird feeders and nesting boxes, including their maintenance.
You will participate in data processing, species identification and analysis of animal behavior.
You will experience daily life in a protected reserve, in the rhythm of the jungle, close to rainforest predators and colorful birds.
Help the forest sing
Helping to solve problems with local communities, including poaching, illegal logging, or when cattle encroach on reserve territory or problematic interactions with large predators. Monitoring thus also helps as prevention against illegal activities.
Knowledge and protection of local biodiversity
Documentation of endangered species
Return of native species to reforested areas
What should I take with me?
If we had to share one piece of advice with explorers, it would be to keep an open mind and a sense of adventure. The second piece of advice would be to pack light.
How safe is Ecuador?
Ecuador is relatively safe, by the standards of any poor country.
What will we eat during the expedition?
During the expedition, we encourage our explorers to perhaps reflect on their usual approach to life. This also includes the food we eat.
How much will this knowledge cost?
We designed this expedition to be affordable while covering all costs associated with the scientific program and the stay in the rainforest.

How do we get to the place?
The expedition will take place near the town of Gualaquiza, in the rainforest at our El Refugio station and on adjacent land that we have already purchased with our sister organization Bosque Medicinal. The bus journey from the nearest international airports is long, so please plan accordingly with breaks.
Flights:
You are responsible for booking your own flights. We recommend flying to Guayaquil, as the airport often has more convenient connections and is cheaper than flying to Cuenca, which is technically closer. Quito is much further north and we do not recommend flying there.
Bus:
Once you land in Guayaquil, take a taxi to the nearby bus terminal and then take a bus either to the city of Cuenca, where you will stay at Hotel Orquídea and our group coordinator will pick you up. Alternatively, you can travel directly to Gualaquiza on your own and stay at Hostel El Paraíso, for example.
